Apple has updated its website and changed the checkout flow when purchasing a new Mac. Previously, the Apple Online Store displayed a variety of preconfigured options with specific processor, RAM, and storage configurations before proceeding to the advanced configurator.
But with this week’s revamp, these preset options have been removed…
This change was spotted by users on Reddit as well as Consomac. This applies equally to all Apple Mac models, desktop and laptop checkout experiences.
Here’s how it works:
Take MacBook Pro as an example. Previously, when you clicked the “Buy” button, you were first taken to a landing page from Apple’s online store. This landing page shows a variety of pre-built options with different chips, RAM, and storage options.
On this page, you can choose a starting configuration by clicking (Select) to fine-tune your machine to your exact preferences, or continue with the default configuration.

The previous “Choose a new Mac” landing page has been removed by Apple.
But starting this week, that first step was removed. Click on the “Purchase” button and you will be taken directly to the configurator. Apple has completely abandoned the landing page strategy. Essentially every Mac is now built from scratch in a configurator.
When you click the “Buy” button, you’ll be taken to a configurator where you choose screen size and color (if you’re buying a laptop), and select certain features like chip, unified memory, and storage capacity.
If you’re the guessing type, this could be a sign that a new MacBook Pro is coming soon. We’re still waiting for Apple to release the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro versions. Perhaps this change to the Apple Store website means Apple is laying the groundwork for its launch.
The checkout flow on new Macs is similar to the iPad and iPhone, so it makes sense that Apple made this change to unify the experience. Still, I can see how that would be confusing for users looking for a specific “starting point” when buying a Mac. It also makes it difficult to directly compare prices between specific configurations.
