Apple has updated its website to announce that Apple Intelligence on Macs requires models with an M2 chip or newer. This is a change to the original compatibility requirements starting with the M1 chip.
However, while this change may be of concern to those using M1 Macs, it seems almost certain that this is an error rather than a change in requirements…
a mcroomers Readers discovered updates made only to the U.S. version of the website. The list of all Macs that previously displayed “M1 and later” will now display “M2 and later.”
As the site points out, this is almost certainly an error caused by someone tasked with updating Vision Pro entries. Initially it was listed simply as M2 as there was only one version, but with the launch of the M5 model it had to be updated to “M2 or newer”.
It appears Apple gave this job to an intern, as they made similar changes to all Mac listings.
I checked the UK website and it hasn’t been updated at all yet. The Vision Pro is still listed as simply M2, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens when other country websites update. However, money smart people think this is a simple mistake. We’ve reached out to Apple and will update if we hear back.
