Last week, Mark Garman outlined six new products that will be launched in new categories after John Tarnas takes over as CEO of Apple. This weekend, Gurman added more to the list with updates on two major new products: AR glasses and a foldable iPad.
Here’s the latest information on Apple’s AR glasses and foldable iPad, according to Mark Gurman.
Mark Garman writes: bloomberg:
- Augmented reality glasses: The dream is to create lightweight glasses with AR that overlay digital information onto real-world views, and eventually in a form factor that replaces the iPhone. The company hopes to launch these between 2028 and 2030.
- Foldable iPad: Apple is working on a 20-inch foldable iPad. The device was a priority for Ternus, but several people who worked on it say it could end up being a bizarre experiment that never sees the light of day.
We haven’t had any notable updates on these future products for a while, but there are some important details to consider.
The schedule for Apple AR Glasses is obviously very fluid, but the fact that a 2028 launch is reportedly still being considered is reassuring.
Apple plans to release AI smart glasses sooner than that. The unveiling is expected to be late this year or early 2027, with the product shipping to users in 2027 either way.
Perhaps as part of its smart glasses development, Apple has made a breakthrough that makes it optimistic that it could launch AR glasses in 2028.
On the other hand, we haven’t heard much about the iPad Fold since last summer. The release date has reportedly been pushed back from late 2026 to 2028.
Sources told Gourmand that the product’s future remains uncertain.
But it’s particularly interesting that the iPad Fold is a “Ternus priority.” If this fall’s foldable iPhone Ultra is a hit, Ternus will quickly jump into developing a foldable iPad.
