Ring’s Familiar Faces feature is a new way to see who’s at your door

Ring is taking a meaningful step toward more contextual smart home alerts with the launch of Familiar Faces.

The new feature, which is currently rolling out to some users in the UK, lets you know exactly who’s coming to your door. This update adds personalized recognition based on Ring’s existing motion detection. As a result, common alerts turn into something much more useful.

With Familiar Faces enabled, users can receive notifications like “Mom at the door” or “Alex at the doorbell,” so they get clear notifications instantly without having to check a live feed. It’s a subtle change. Nevertheless, this is consistent with a broader trend towards more ambient and proactive smart home experiences.

This feature works by detecting faces captured by your Ring doorbell or camera. This allows you to assign names to those individuals. Over time, the system builds a private personal directory of up to 50 familiar faces. This is for everyone from families to regular visitors such as dog walkers and babysitters.

Beyond novelty, Familiar Faces is clearly aimed at solving real-world annoyances. For example, you can mute notifications for people you frequent, such as family members. You will still receive a warning for unknown visitors. This means fewer unnecessary pings and more meaningful updates.

It also adds a layer of passive reassurance. Instantly know when your child is home or when a trusted visitor stops by. Reduces the need for regular checks.

Additionally, facial recognition in the home inevitably raises privacy concerns. That’s why Ring leans heavily into user control here. Familiar Faces is fully opt-in and users must manually enable it in the app. Facial data is encrypted and associated only with your account and is not shared beyond that. In addition, the system asks users to confirm whether they have appropriate consent when identifying an individual. This is especially true in regions with stricter data laws.

Meanwhile, to keep things tidy, unnamed faces are automatically deleted after 30 days. This prevents unnecessary data from accumulating.

This feature is currently rolling out to compatible 2K, 4K and some HD Ring devices in the UK. You’ll also need a Ring subscription tier, such as Pro or Pro Intelligence.

As with many new features for Ring, this is likely to expand to more regions over time. However, for now, availability is limited.
