Earlier today, a new report revealed that Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro overhaul will actually be called the MacBook Ultra. That’s why my new Mac sounds like exactly the model I was looking for.
MacBook Pro redesign, rumored to be called “MacBook Ultra” at launch
Last month, Mark Garman suggested that Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro, with its new design, touchscreen, OLED, and more, could be called the MacBook Ultra.
It seemed like just speculation, but today… mac world We reported that Apple is indeed planning to call its new high-end laptop the “MacBook Ultra.”
I was already very excited about the new model, but naming it Ultra made it even more likely that it was the right computer for me.
It’s been a long time since a Mac became my main computer. When the original iPad Pro was released in 2015, I switched to an iPad-first computing setup.
A big motivator for me was that Mac didn’t get the level of investment it deserved.
I love Macs, but for a while Apple seemed content to leave them alone. macOS has seen very few changes from year to year, and has always lagged behind iOS and iPadOS when it comes to new features, apps, and innovation.
Mac hardware experienced a particularly tough time in the pre-Apple silicon era. But even though Apple has reversed course in recent years, the Mac still lacks some key hardware features that I love about the iPad.

- No cell phone option
When it was rumored that some of these features would be coming to the M6 MacBook Pro, I was excited about the new model. But if Apple were to position this product as a MacBook Ultra, I think it would be an even better fit for me. Here’s why:
Why the MacBook Ultra makes more sense for me than the new MacBook Pro
Apple silicon has made every Mac incredibly powerful, making the MacBook Pro perhaps more niche as a result.
My computing needs are very simple. I write for a living, do a little photo editing, and use Slack, Messages, Safari, and other “basic” computing apps.
A MacBook Air or even a MacBook Neo can easily meet these needs. But I wasn’t excited about the M6 MacBook Pro because of its power, but rather because of its innovative features.
And I guess that’s what Apple’s new wave of “Ultra” devices is all about.
If the iPhone Ultra and MacBook Ultra actually arrive, I think Apple will use “Ultra” to emphasize innovation over pure functionality.
In some ways, the iPhone Ultra is inferior to the iPhone 18 Pro. But it offers unique and cutting-edge features, which makes it “Ultra.”
The MacBook Ultra is reportedly thinner and lighter than the current MacBook Pro. There’s no doubt we’ll continue to see Pro- and Max-level chips, but “thin” doesn’t exactly indicate that Apple is going to make it more powerful than the MacBook Pro.
Instead, “Ultra” might be used to mean the most innovative, cutting-edge Mac available. This will be the first model to feature touch support, OLED, a new dynamic island cutout, and possibly a C2 cellular modem.
In this sense, the MacBook Ultra is exactly what I want. You don’t need an insanely powerful machine. I just want a Mac that significantly advances the platform.
Obviously, we don’t expect the MacBook Ultra to lag behind the MacBook Pro. But while the newer MacBook Pros seem to be targeted at more “pro” use cases, what I really want is a high-end Mac that certainly performs well and also has the latest features I’m used to on the iPad.
The idea of ”ultra” pricing is not very appealing. But everything else about this new model excites me.
