Apple will soon launch a new iPad mini. This will be the first update to the device in two years and is expected to be a big one. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming new iPad mini.
OLED display
The biggest change to the new iPad mini is the display. According to multiple sources, the iPad mini 8 will be equipped with an OLED display.
This is a dramatic improvement over the iPad mini’s current LCD panel. For users, the move to OLED means deeper blacks, richer colors, and better contrast. The iPhone X was the first iPhone to feature an OLED display in 2017, and the OLED iPad Pro debuted in 2024.
One question that still remains, however, is whether the new iPad mini will use a ProMotion display that supports refresh rates of up to 120Hz. According to a sketchy rumor from last week, the new iPad mini will not offer ProMotion support and will instead be limited to 60Hz.
However, this is not corroborated by other sources, so we hope this leak is wrong.
new chip
The current iPad mini, released in October 2024, is equipped with Apple’s A17 Pro chip. The new iPad mini is likely to have an A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip. This will definitely improve performance and potentially enable support for cutting-edge Siri AI features in iOS 27.
Excellent water resistance
According to bloombergApple has tested a “redesigned case” for the iPad mini that is water resistant just like the iPhone.
It remains to be seen whether this waterproof case will work. However, this greatly increases the durability of the iPad mini. One of the best features of a dedicated e-reader like the Kindle is its water resistance, so it’s especially worth noting for those who use it as an e-reader.
new speaker technology
The iPad mini 8 could also be Apple’s first device with a new vibration-based speaker system. This vibration-based speaker system allows Apple to eliminate speaker holes, making it easier to make the device water-resistant.
In contrast, the iPhone has a speaker hole, but Apple uses gaskets and adhesives to make the device more water-resistant.
New iPad mini release date
According to the latest reports, bloombergApple is aiming to release an OLED iPad mini as early as October this year. This is said to be “the biggest overhaul of the iPad mini in five years.”
The price of the new iPad mini is unknown. Last month, Apple increased the price of the current iPad mini from $499 to $599 (currently discounted to $549 on Amazon). It remains to be seen whether the new iPad mini with OLED will be even more expensive.
