Apple Eyes’ first fantasy series
around hollywood reporterApple secured the rights to Sanderson’s Cosmere books in what it described as a “competitive situation where Sanderson met with almost every studio head in the city.”
From the report:
“According to sources,[the deal]gives the original author a high level of control over the screen translation. Sanderson will be the world architect, write the screenplay, produce, consult and get approvals. It’s a level of involvement that even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin wouldn’t enjoy.”
Sanderson’s work spans multiple series set in different worlds and time periods within Cosmere, which he describes as “a fictional world that I have created so that many of[his]fantasy novels take place within.”
THR According to “The first titles being considered for film adaptation are the “Mistborn” feature film series and the “Stormlight Archive” series for television, with the latter already having a producer attached.
There is legitimate speculation that this will be Apple’s first major fantasy series. Sanderson has a devoted fan base, with more than 50 million copies of his books purchased, crowdfunded publishing projects raising more than $140 million, and a sold-out annual fantasy convention, Dragonsteel Nexus, which Sanderson also headlines.
As of now, there is no set release schedule for the projects announced as part of the deal. But the next Dragonsteel Nexus is scheduled for December 3rd to December 5th, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple and Sanderson use the event to share updates and start building hype.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and includes popular TV shows and movies like Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, Silo, and more.
