Last week, a new report on the success of the MacBook Neo included details about Apple’s plans for the product’s successor, and the next-gen Neo already sounds like a big upgrade.
The new MacBook Neo’s A19 Pro chip brings three benefits
The MacBook Neo looks like a big hit no matter how you look at it.
Apple has not disclosed official sales figures. But Tim Cook admitted that when Neo came out, it was the best Mac launch week ever among new Mac buyers. And last week, it was reported that the product’s success has caused Apple to run out of A18 Pro chips much sooner than expected.
The same report provided an update on the next-gen Neo.
Tim Culpan, Author: Carpium:
We’re told that before the dilemma posed by this phenomenal success, Apple was only planning to have its suppliers build a new Neo next year with the current-generation binned A19 Pro chip.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Apple include a new chip in the next MacBook Neo, with the A19 Pro being the most obvious choice. However, it’s good to get confirmation from someone with connections and expertise in this field.
Even if Apple doesn’t change anything with the next MacBook Neo, the A19 Pro would be a big upgrade because of three advantages:
- 12GB RAM, up from 8GB
- More powerful CPU, especially GPU
- Increased efficiency offers potential battery improvements
The current 8GB limit on the Neo is one of the few common complaints about this machine, so more RAM is a big deal. 8GB is perfectly fine for most users, but increasing it by 50% to 12GB makes the Neo even better suited for tasks beyond basic web browsing, email, and messaging.
Performance improvements will help in that department as well. And while the A19 Pro’s CPU is only slightly faster than the A18 Pro, the GPU has a big advantage. This is thanks to the addition of neural accelerators to all GPU cores.
Neural accelerators deliver up to 3x improvements for AI-centric GPU tasks. This applies not only to Apple Intelligence features and the upcoming new Siri, but also to games.
Finally, the A19 Pro has efficiency advantages over its predecessor. This probably won’t make a huge difference in battery life, but it should make some difference. And every bit helps.
Will the new MacBook Neo make you want to upgrade from your current Mac? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
