Apple Stores has taken two important steps to try to prevent scratches and marks on the display unit.
Since the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup, there have been concerns about scratches on the backglass and camera plateau. Shoppers noticed scratches and marks on the Apple Store display unit almost immediately. I also noticed a few:
Problemous Magsuff Stand
In response, Apple said it had investigated and determined the cause of the mark caused by the worn Magsafe stand. From the cyberstorehut Chance Mirror:
Apple says they have determined that these defects are caused by worn mag safe stands used in some stores. It also makes it clear that the mark is not a scratch, but rather a material transfer to a mobile phone that can be removed by cleaning. The company says it is working to address these issues, possibly by replacing worn-out mag safe stands. Other iPhones on display will also be affected by this, including the iPhone 16 model.
Apple Stores’ Magsafe Stand is similar to the Magsafe charger that is sold. When you lift the phone off the stand, it’s very easy to hit the ring, and the ring appears to be worn out and missing over time.
How Apple is fixing the issue
Recently, some shoppers have noticed that Apple stores have started putting silicone rings on the edge of their stands. For example, in Apple’s latest Ginza store:
However, these silicone rings do not correct any already damaged models. Bloomberg’s Markgerman details how Apple is tackling this issue with today’s power of its newsletter.
Over the past few days, Apple Corporate contacted retail staff and informed them that the back of the demo unit needs to be cleaned more regularly by mixing the salt material with the usual solution.
I’m not sure what exactly the mixture Apple is using, but I was curious if they’d try to replicate the effect. My own iPhone 17 Pro got some marks by using the stand on the Apple Store during setup. I mixed some sea salt with water and it actually worked:
Of course, your mileage may vary, but this was far more effective for me than water and isopropyl alcohol.
Final Thoughts
It was a pleasant surprise to see that the scratches were removed from the iPhone! Can you do the same? Please let me know in the comments.
