Wyze is taking an unconventional approach to outdoor surveillance with its new Window Cam, a security camera designed to keep you safe indoors while monitoring what’s happening outside.
Instead of mounting hardware on the outside of your home, Wyze’s “rear window” style setup allows the camera to be visible from behind glass. No weatherproofing, battery replacement, or outdoor power outlets required.
While Wyze has offered window mounts for other cameras before, the Window Cam is built specifically for this use case. There are usually no infrared LEDs or standard night vision lights that reflect off the glass and cause glare. Instead, the camera utilizes a wide f/1.0 aperture for enhanced color night vision, capturing usable footage even in minimal ambient light.
It records in 1080p and has a horizontal field of view of 101 degrees and a narrower vertical field of view of 53.9 degrees. The included mount has a large black bezel that cuts out reflections from indoor lighting, and the camera body is attached using a hook-and-loop fastener. The mount sticks to the window using an adhesive pad, so it’s not reusable, but Wyze does come with a spare in case you need to reposition it later.
Power is provided via a 10-foot microUSB cable, and you can add your own microSD card up to 512GB for local 24/7 recording. The built-in microphone and speaker provide basic two-way audio, but obviously speaking through a closed window can’t match the clarity of an outdoor camera.
Window Cam supports Wyze’s motion detection alerts, and subscribers to Cam Unlimited Pro plans can get an AI-generated description of what the camera is capturing. Cloud storage options range from $2.99 to $19.99 per month, but some users may still be wary. Wyze is working to rebuild trust after a recent breach that briefly exposed feeds from thousands of customers’ cameras, as well as previously undisclosed vulnerabilities in discontinued models. )
