Tired of greasy, sticky dandruff? Here are 6 easy fixes you need

Are you suffering from oily and sticky dandruff? Discover 6 easy ways to get a clean, dandruff-free scalp and feel good again.

Are you frustrated with the constant battle with dandruff? Have you tried many shampoos and home remedies but the unpleasant white flakes keep coming back? Dandruff comes in many forms, and each type has its own symptoms. If your dandruff is sticky, sticky, or itchy on your scalp, you may have oily, sticky dandruff. This condition can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Many young men in their 20s and 30s face this problem and often think it’s just “product buildup” or oil on their scalp. It’s important to realize that oily, sticky dandruff is a separate issue. This awareness is the first step to proper treatment.

What is oily, sticky dandruff?

Oily, sticky dandruff is different from dry dandruff. If it remains on your scalp, you may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. This happens when your scalp secretes too much oil called sebum. “Dandruff occurs when this oily scalp mixes with a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia globosa,” celebrity cosmetologist and dermatologist Dr. Amit Bhasin tells Healthshots. As a result, your scalp becomes itchy, oily, and develops sticky dandruff that is difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are ways to manage it and reduce those annoying flakes.

Here are six easy solutions to achieve a clean, dandruff-free scalp.

  1. Switch to a deep-cleansing anti-dandruff shampoo

Many shampoos are made for dry, flaky dandruff, but they don’t work for people who have oily, sticky dandruff buildup. Instead, choose a shampoo containing piroctone olamine and oxidized charcoal.

  • Piroctone olamine: “This ingredient targets the fungi that cause dandruff. It has properties that fight these fungi and address the main problem,” says the hairdresser.
  • Oxidized charcoal: This product removes excess oil and dirt from your hair and deeply cleanses it without stripping your scalp of its natural moisture.

When choosing a shampoo, read the label carefully. Choose one specifically for oily dandruff.

2. Please wash more often in humid environment

High humidity can make oily hair worse and lead to greasy dandruff. If sweat or oil builds up, washing your hair more often can help prevent this problem. Here are some tips:

  • Wash your clothes at least three times a week. If you live in a humid area or engage in activities that make you sweat, you should wash your hair more often.
  • Post-workout shower: After a workout or spending time in the heat, rinsing your hair can help control oil on your scalp.

“To manage oily dandruff, it’s important to keep your scalp clean,” suggests an expert.

3. Always rinse twice

When washing your hair, be sure to rinse it thoroughly. Any leftover shampoo or products can cause flakes to stick to your scalp. To properly rinse, follow these steps:

  • First rinse: Apply anti-dandruff shampoo to your scalp, massage and rinse thoroughly.
  • Second rinse: Repeat the process with a little more shampoo. This will help remove any remaining oil or residue.

This simple habit can greatly reduce the chances of stubborn dandruff returning.

4. Use oils and serums sparingly

Using hair oils and serums is good for your hair, but too much can lead to oily, sticky dandruff. Applying heavy oils overnight can trap excess sebum in your scalp, compromising its cleanliness and freshness.

Here’s how to effectively manage your oil usage:

  • Limit to once a week: “Rather than applying oil every day, use it less often and in small doses. This gives your scalp a chance to breathe,” explains the doctor.
  • Thorough cleaning: After applying plenty of oil to your hair, wash your hair thoroughly with an anti-dandruff shampoo to remove build-up.

5. Avoid waxes and thick gels

If you have oily, sticky dandruff, using heavy waxes or gels can be harmful. These products can suffocate your scalp and trap oil and dead skin, making the problem worse.

  • Choose a lightweight styling product. “To style your hair, use light products that won’t irritate your scalp,” explains Dr. Bersin.
  • Daily shampoo: If you used heavy hair products, wash your hair thoroughly the same day. This will help prevent buildup.

6. Balance your diet and manage stress

Your overall health affects your scalp. Eating a lot of sugar and junk food can cause oily dandruff. Also, high stress levels can make this problem worse.

Consider making dietary adjustments such as:

  • Hydration: “Drink lots of water to stay hydrated,” says Dr. Bersin.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to keep your skin and scalp healthy.
  • Stress management: Try relaxation methods like yoga, meditation, and regular exercise to reduce stress.
