Tim Cook: Apple sold 3 billion iPhones

Today, Apple reported revenue for the third quarter of 2025, beating analysts’ expectations in key categories, including revenue, earnings per share and iPhone revenue.

In a call with analysts today, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple has just surpassed another major milestone.

For those who track at home, Apple shipped 1 billion iPhones in July 2016, nine years after the release of the first iPhone. At the time, Cook was advertising the iPhone as “one of the most important, world-changing, successful products in history.”

Apple did not publicly announce that it had shipped 2 billion iPhones, but analysts estimate it occurred around September 2021.

Cook’s comments had little fanfare during Apple’s third quarter 2025 revenue calls. “We recently marked an important milestone. We have shipped 3 billion iPhones since its launch in 2007,” Cook said in a prepared statement.

This figure is worth noting as Apple stopped reporting unit sales of hardware products in November 2018. At the time, CFO Luca Maestri said “the number of units sold in a quarter is not representative of the fundamental business.”
