A fun new video from the PhoneBuff YouTube channel shows just how much faster iPhones are actually getting over the years. Or is it? Check it out below.
How much will the annual performance increase actually be?
You’ve probably seen one of PhoneBuff’s videos. There, a robotic arm flies across a smartphone screen to compare how different models handle the same set of tasks.
And while many may feel compelled to point out that these tests are neither strictly scientific nor conclusive, they can be just as entertaining, creative, and hypnotic.
Latest video (via) mac magazine), PhoneBuff takes on what it claims is the largest and most intensive speed test ever, comparing 6 generations of iPhone Pro Max 12 to 17.
This experiment is an interesting way to visualize how much each device’s performance has improved or degraded over the years, and to highlight how those year-over-year improvements compound over several generations.
The video shows that for tasks that involve heavier workflows such as image capture and processing, app loading, gaming, and photo and video editing, improving performance is not as easy as you think.
For example, the iPhone 13 Pro Max performed pretty solidly against the new model in multiple stages, while (spoiler alert) the iPhone 17 Pro Max finished the test comfortably against all competitors.
Even if you’re not a fan of this kind of speed test, and let’s be honest, you’ve never been good at it, this one is especially interesting and well worth the 12 minutes you spend on it.
