Five years after Apple stopped selling its products, it could be “vintage.” That means Apple still repairs. Five years later, it could become “outdated” and Apple no longer offers hardware services or parts. That day is the day for Apple Watch Series 1. This is what it means
Wait, is it a Series 1 or a second generation Apple Watch?
In a nutshell, both. They are the same photograph device. When Apple released the original Apple Watch in 2015, there was no series number. The following year, when Apple introduced two new models, Series 1 and Series 2, it retroactively renamed the original Apple Watch to Series 0.
Series 1 was essentially a repackaged Series 0 with a faster processor, but Series 2 was the true successor to the original Apple Watch, with GPS and water resistance added as well.
Today, Apple Watch Series 1 has been officially moved from “Vintage” to “Old” list (via Macle Tumor), will be participating in Series 2. Interestingly, this was awarded the “outdated” designation in November 2024.
Why are there differences in time frames?
Apple can tag products as vintage or obsolete after the 5 or 10 year mark, but often wait until service parts run out to make changes. In this case, the company may have exhausted Series 2 parts before Series 1. Right now, it’s probably off both parts.
If you’re still sports a Series 1 Apple Watch, it’s not necessarily the end of the line, but it can be difficult to get support.
