According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market will be one of the factors driving the category’s average selling price up by 18% in 2026. Here are the details:
Book type climbs, clamshell slides
In a recently released report, Counterpoint Research predicts that the average selling price of a foldable smartphone will reach $1,485 in 2026, an increase of 18% from 2025 and 29% from 2024.
Counterpoint predicts that average selling prices for book-type foldable products, the expected form factor for the iPhone Fold (also rumored to be iPhone Ultra), will continue to rise, while clamshell models will remain below average in 2024.

The two main foldable form factors are going in different directions. As more brands enter the market and production expands, clamshell foldable devices are becoming cheaper and closer to replacing premium bar-style smartphones. Meanwhile, book-type foldables remain at the high end as brands integrate larger displays, improved hinges, larger batteries, improved cameras, and productivity-focused features. Book-type models now make up a larger portion of total foldable shipments, increasing overall ASP.
The report also notes that the share of shipments of foldable products in the $1,600 to $2,000 price range is expected to nearly double, from 30% in 2025 to 58% in 2026. Meanwhile, models priced above $2,000 are expected to drop from 3% to 2%.
The iPhone Fold is currently expected to fall into this high end of the price range, with IDC recently predicting an average selling price of $2,500 and reaching $3,000 in some configurations.
Finally, Counterpoint stated that “Apple’s entry into the foldable market is expected to further support the upward trend in ASP by maintaining the market’s focus on the higher-priced segment,” adding that this “will increase focus on software continuity, app support, and productivity across the foldable category, helping to establish foldables as a higher-value segment within the smartphone market.”
