I bought this to replace an older HP color laser printer which has been a solid unit in my home for many many years. While my old printer is still functional, it’s also broken. My dog decided to jump on it, rip the toner door open, and break the mechanism that releases the slide-out to replace the cartridges. Once they’re used up, it’s game over… so I figured… why not upgrade?
While I had no trouble at all getting this new printer set up and added to my network, there are definitely a few things I’m not thrilled with.
For starters, it’s wider than my old printer by a couple inches. Not the end of the world, but space is tight and this could be a problem for some users.
Secondly, my old printer had a pop-out manual feed tray. If you wanted to print some photos, you could load a handful of sheets into the tray and the printer would pull them one-by-one. The new 3301 has a manual feed slot which only allows you to load one sheet at a time.
Finally, I’m not super thrilled with the color tone when printing photos. I printed the same photo on the same glossy photo paper on my 3301 and my old 476, and the 476 just looks more natural. Print quality is identical, but color tone is just a bit off.
I wish I could send my old 476 off to be repaired, but considering its age I just don’t think that could be an option anymore.
I’ll be keeping this printer because I like HP’s laser printers and the HP Smart app and the price was right. I’m hoping I’ll get the same service life out of this machine as my old 476 as long as the dog stays away!
