New Apple TV documentary series explores the life of tennis legend Andre Agassi

Apple TV today announced that it is working on a “multi-part documentary series about the extraordinary life” of tennis icon Andre Agassi. Here are the details:

“A thrilling, complex and moving story”

As Apple TV stated in a press release, today’s announcement comes on the 16th anniversary of the release of “Open: An Autobiography.”

Shortly after its release, the book became a #1 New York Times bestseller for its frank and often disturbing look at Agassi’s life, career, fame, identity, and even his struggles with drug use.

Agassi’s tennis career spanned more than 20 years, from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s. During this time, he won eight Grand Slam singles titles, completed a career Grand Slam, and reached No. 1 in the world rankings, a position he held for a total of 101 weeks.

Here’s Apple’s announcement:

Today, 16 years after the publication of his famous memoir Open: An Autobiography, widely considered one of the greatest sports books in American literature, Apple TV announced that it will air a multi-part documentary series about the remarkable life of Andre Agassi. The series, which tells the thrilling, complex and moving story of an American legend, is directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Chris Smith, produced by Smith Library Films, and executive produced by Stacey Smith and Justin Gimelstob.

This is director Chris Smith’s second collaboration with Apple TV, following the three-part documentary series “Hollywood Con Queen,” which launched in 2024.

Outside of Apple TV, Smith has had a long career in high-profile documentaries, including Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond and Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. He directed both for Netflix and also co-produced Tiger King.

What was missing from today’s announcement was a release window for Agassi’s documentary series, which suggests it will be a while before it hits screens.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and includes popular TV shows and movies like Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, Silo, and more.
