iPhone crossbody straps aren’t as useful as they seem

With the launch of the iPhone 17 lineup this fall, Apple debuted a new accessory: the crossbody strap. It’s true that the reaction was lukewarm, but after actually trying it out, I think it’s a pretty clever concept. At least, if you’re qualified for it.

For those who don’t know, Apple’s new iPhone crossbody strap is an adjustable strap that can be used with the official iPhone 17 lineup cases. There are two securing points at the bottom corners of the Apple case. This means that to take advantage of this, you’ll need to look deep into Apple’s accessory offerings, both by purchasing Apple’s official crossbody strap for $59 or by purchasing an Apple case for $50-60.

Fortunately, there are many third-party crossbody strap options on the market. I personally used Orbitkey’s products. It costs $35 and can be used with any iPhone case. This strap isn’t really the focus here, but I can tell you it’s really well made.

Why I love the idea of a crossbody strap

When we talk about crossbody straps for cell phones, most people immediately think, “Why don’t I just keep my phone in my pocket? That doesn’t seem necessary.”

And certainly, that’s been the approach for over a decade: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That said, as someone who lives in New York City and often puts my phone in and out of my pocket while walking, I find a crossbody strap to be quite useful. It saves me time and makes my phone easier to use.

Is it a game changer? No, that’s why I ultimately won’t invest in Apple’s crossbody strap. Too expensive for something a little fancy.

However, there are some useful elements. Suffice it to say that I actually like having it. True, it’s a little different. But I’d say I’m more satisfied with being able to drop my phone when I’m done using it than slipping it into my pocket.

summary

All in all, crossbody straps are one of those accessories that you have to try before you understand. For people who often drop their phones, use their phones as their main camera, or walk outside a lot, this can be a pretty nifty accessory.

Is anyone considering a crossbody strap for their iPhone? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
