I’m very excited about Apple’s affordable MacBook, but I have one concern.

Apple has confirmed that a series of products will be announced starting Monday, and the rumored MacBook is definitely the one I’m most looking forward to. There are few compromises rumored to make it more affordable, but I wouldn’t worry about them (some actually seem like features).

Channeling a 12-inch MacBook

I liked the portability of the 2015 12-inch MacBook, but it was in many ways more premium than the MacBook Air until a few years later.

I still expect it to be undefeated in the design department, but I hope at least some of the spirit of that machine lives on in the new model.

Rumored compromises are easy to ignore

This week’s alleged leak made a series of claims about what to expect from a MacBook rumored to be powered by Apple’s A18 Pro chip.

I don’t use high impedance headphones and value overall battery life over fast charging. I’m fine without a True Tone display, as I usually turn that feature off everywhere.

I do appreciate a brighter display when I occasionally use my computer in bright environments, but I usually run my 500-nit MacBook Air at about 75% already.

It’s a shame there’s no backlit keyboard, but I’ve experimented with turning it off for days at a time as a preference.

The Mac SSD speed debate a few years ago was more theoretical to me than anything else. So you’re probably good at that. I’m not looking to add more local storage, but thanks to cloud storage I’m already below the 256GB storage mark.

my only concern is RAM

The one thing that will make you reconsider even trying to live with the rumored A18 Pro-powered MacBook is the RAM.

Apple’s decision to completely eliminate 8GB RAM Macs in favor of 16GB RAM a few years ago was a great one. More RAM isn’t a must for me, especially if value is a priority, but it does make everything run smoother.

So for now, what I’m thinking about is the idea of a regular MacBook.

I want my Mac laptop to be as easy to use as the M4 Mac mini, and the discounted M4 MacBook Air is already pretty close.

But if a low-power MacBook is slightly more portable than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air, I’ll be even more inclined to give it a try.
