Homey’s app turns your TV into a smart hub to control your home

Homey is pushing the smart home back into the living room. Now the television takes over the role of control.

The company has released a dedicated app for Android TV and LG’s webOS. As a result, the largest screen in your home has become a complete smart home dashboard for your devices, automations, and routines.

Post-installation setup is intentionally easy. When a user logs in by scanning a QR code, the interface is immediately optimized for remote control navigation rather than touch or mobile input. It’s a small but important change. This gives you a native experience on your TV rather than a ported mobile app.

From there, Homey focuses on what you need. Favorites appear first for quick access to commonly used devices, flows, and moods. This means you can trigger lighting scenes, bedtime routines, or “movie night” settings with just a few clicks. No need to explore nested menus. Separate sections for devices and flows are still available for more granular control.

This is a clear indication of where smart home platforms are heading. The television has become one of the most natural control surfaces in the modern home, always on, always visible, and usually placed at the center of a shared space. Homie is leaning towards that role. This effectively turns a passive display screen into an active control panel.

But the updates don’t stop at TV. Homey also introduced a browser-based version at Homey.tv. This extends the scope of control beyond the home itself. The company notes that it also works with some vehicle browsers, including Tesla’s in-car systems. This allows for slightly more specialized use cases, such as triggering an automation before you get home or opening your garage door from your driveway.

This rollout supports a wide range of Homey setups, including Homey Cloud, Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, and self-hosted Homey Server configurations. On the TV side, LG’s webOS app is compatible with some 2021 and newer models. However, availability may vary by region and device.

Taken together, this update reflects broader trends in smart home design. The idea is to move control away from your phone and onto shared, ambient surfaces that are already part of your daily life.
