As is often the case by the time a new Apple product hits store shelves, Geekbench’s early benchmark results are already making waves. Here’s how the two results turned out with the M4 iPad Air.
Up to 22% performance improvement depending on how measured
as discovered by mcroomerstwo Geekbench test results were revealed earlier today purporting to be from the new M4 iPad Air.
Both list the iPad model identifier iPad16,11 (equivalent to the 13-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular model), and the first test scored 3,438 on the single-core CPU test and 12,885 on the multi-core CPU test, and the second test scored 3,714 and 12,296, respectively.
For reference, the 13-inch M3 iPad Air’s Geekbench scores are 3,048 single-core and 11,667 multi-core, suggesting the new device will see gains of 13% to 22% in single-core and 5% to 10% in multi-core CPU performance.
That said, one of the interesting things about the M4 iPad Air is the fact that Apple has changed the number of cores on the chip compared to the previous M4 chip.
The iPad Air’s M4 chip had an 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU, while the iPad Pro’s M4 chip had up to a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU.
Geekbench gave the 13-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular M4 iPad Pro a score of 3,704 on the single-core CPU performance test and 13,805 on the multi-core CPU performance test. This suggests that the iPad Air’s new M4 chip is equal to 7% slower in single-core performance and about 7% to 11% slower in multi-core performance.
Of course, it’s always worth remembering that Geekbench scores, especially those of unreleased devices, should be taken with a grain of salt.
Once the device hits stores on March 11th, more benchmark results will be revealed, along with reviews and hands-on tests that will give a clearer picture of how the new model compares to the existing model in real-world use.
