Backbone’s New Pink and Purple Edition iPhone Controller: Hands-on and Review

Recently, Backbone launched new pink and purple editions of its Pro and One controllers, with a focus on design and casual gaming.

overview

Backbone has long made snap-in controllers for iPhones and other phones. Earlier this year, we introduced Backbone Pro, which takes the popular Backbone One and adds new features like Bluetooth support and high-quality controls. One of the best things about Backbone’s controllers is that they are universally designed. You can use it with your iPhone, Android phone, or just about any other device through a wired connection.

pink and purple edition

This week, Backbone announced two new products: Backbone Pro: Pink Edition and Backbone One: Purple Edition. Both controllers are great for intense gaming, but these new colorways are designed for users looking for a more fun design with a focus on more casual, relaxing gaming.

I received the pink Backbone Pro to review. The colors are really nice and fun.

gameplay experience

I’m admittedly just a gamer, so I was excited to try out this controller. I feel that the quality is very high and the response is good. This was my first time using a controller to play a mobile game, and it definitely improved the experience.

backbone app

One of the great things about Backbone’s controller is that it’s not platform-specific. This also applies to apps. Launch games on your phone or stream them from GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also works with the Steam Link app.

Backbone also offers Backbone+, a subscription service that offers features such as classic game emulators and special game perks.

Finally, a dedicated orange button gives you one-click access to the Backbone app.

apple games

In addition to its own app, Backbone features full integration with Apple Games. It supports controller profiles, works with the Apple Games app and supported games, and can even open the Apple Games overlay by holding down the backbone button.

port

Both Backbone controllers feature a USB-C port and a headphone jack. The USB-C port allows pass-through charging for long gaming sessions.

For those who prefer a fully wired setup, the USB-C port allows you to connect wired to almost any device. When playing on your phone, you can use the headphone jack to connect wired headphones instead of relying on Bluetooth.

backbone emulator

My favorite part of the Backbone+ subscription is the built-in emulator. Built to be as simple as possible. Just load your (legally obtained) file and the app will automatically handle the state saving for you. I tried it out with two of my favorite classic games and it was clearly better to play with a controller than with a touch screen.

pink vs purple

Backbone Pro (pink) offers several useful features and enhancements compared to Backbone One (purple).

  • Wireless compatibility and up to 40 hours of battery life
  • Two customizable back buttons
  • Full size ALPS joystick and Hall effect triggers (compared to “compact precision joystick” and analog triggers)
  • Larger form factor improves grip
  • Full customization with button remapping and profiles in the Backbone app
  • Textured grip (vs. smooth matte finish)

I especially appreciate the wireless functionality. This controller is lighter and more compact than typical console controllers, making it ideal for traveling and other on-the-go gameplay.
