Apple is expected to launch its next-generation M6 chip this fall, but rumors suggest the new chip could skip many new products.
The M6 is expected to be quickly replaced by the M7 generation, skipping products such as the iMac and Mac mini
Apple still has some M5 products rumored to launch in the coming months, but the launch of the M6 chip generation is also expected.
Mark Garman recently bloomberg provided surprising details about Apple’s plans for the M6 and beyond.
He reported that Apple only plans to ship the base M6 chip, with no M6 Pro or M6 Max in development. Instead, the company is reportedly accelerating the M7’s timeline, as it is “primarily designed around significant advances in on-device AI processing.”
The main products that Garman particularly emphasizes as adopting the M6 chip are: New base model MacBook Pro In line with current industrial design.
Does that mean Apple will only have one M6 product before moving on to the M7? Probably not.
Garman said Apple could launch the M7 chip “as early as the first half of next year.” But there are some new products coming early next year, which could debut on the M6 by then.
- The new iPad Pro is expected to arrive in spring 2027. This could be the first M7 product, but more likely it will be powered by an M6 chip.
- A new MacBook Air is also rumored to arrive in early 2027, which is also a strong candidate for the M6 update.
However, aside from these two possibilities and the base MacBook Pro, it seems like the M6 chip generation will completely skip many other Apple products. These include the Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, and Apple’s high-end MacBook Pro.
