Apple will soon release a new MacBook, and the latest rumors suggest it will resolve all the issues that plagued the previously discontinued model.
The last “MacBook” was loved by some, but had serious flaws
The last time Apple introduced a brand new MacBook in addition to the existing Air and Pro models was in 2015.
The 12-inch MacBook was hailed by Apple as “the future of notebooks.” The official tagline is “Reinventing the notebook.”
Apple’s MacBook was extremely thin and light, had a beautiful Retina display, and looked and felt futuristic in many ways.
But the MacBook is more widely remembered for its flaws than its strengths.
For example, the following topics were covered:
- The unreliable butterfly keyboard that has plagued Apple laptops for years
- Underpowered Intel Core M processor
- Single USB-C port (also for charging)
- Shorter battery life compared to MacBook Air
And all those issues came with a premium price tag of $1,299, which was more than the MacBook Air at the time.
No matter how you look at it, the MacBook was supposed to be the successor to the MacBook Air. But despite being loved by some, most users ultimately rejected the MacBook in favor of the “older” MacBook Air.
Why Apple’s new MacBook is different
The upcoming MacBook resurgence seems to have a completely different goal for Apple.
Apple isn’t trying to be the “future of notebooks,” it’s trying to make Macs easier to use. Your target customers are probably iPhone users who have a PC or Chromebook, or people who don’t have a computer at all.
But thanks to lessons learned, Apple silicon, and technological advances, this new 12.9-inch MacBook should not have the same flaws as its predecessor.
Mac keyboards have been stable since the last butterfly model was discontinued. I don’t expect anything different from the new MacBook.
Apple silicon is powerful enough that even the iPhone-class A18 Pro chip will prove more than enough for the average user.
New MacBooks are expected to offer at least two USB-C ports, or perhaps one and a MagSafe charger. Either way, the situation should be better than last time. This is partly because USB-C is much more popular than it was in 2015.
And finally, Apple has already proven that it can make ultra-thin devices with surprisingly good battery life. You can thank Apple Silicon for that.
In addition to all these improvements, the price is rumored to be around $699, which is several hundred dollars cheaper than the MacBook Air.
The new MacBook doesn’t have the futuristic, premium shine of its predecessor. But according to the latest rumors, the computer as a whole should definitely be better.
