Apple TV has a strong lineup of new movies coming out this year, but the streamer has revealed that another high-profile title is in the works, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Apple TV announces release of ‘What Happens at Night’ movie, shares first photo
Over the past few months, various reports have highlighted some of the most notable new movies in the works for Apple TV.
What Happens at Night is directed by Martin Scorsese and features an outstanding cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Mads Mikkelsen.
Today, Apple confirmed for the first time that the film exists and is in production, while also releasing the first images of DiCaprio and Lawrence’s characters.
The film is inspired by Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name. The synopsis of this book is as follows.
An anonymous American couple travels to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It was a difficult journey as the wife was battling cancer and was desperately weak, and the husband was worried that the orphanage would not be able to release the child because of her illness.
Upon arrival, the couple checks into the deserted, cave-like and eerie Borgarfjaroasisla Grand Imperial Hotel. There, the bar is always open and the lobby is filled with mysterious characters, from an ancient flamboyant singer to a prodigal businessman to a mysterious faith healer. In this mysterious, frozen world, nothing is as it seems, and the more a couple struggles to have a baby, the more they seem to lose touch with their marriage, themselves, and life itself.
The release date of the new movie has not been determined. However, according to one report, production is expected to continue until May. If filming ends quickly, “It Happens at Night” could premiere as early as this fall. If that happens, it will be a strong contender for next year’s Oscar Awards.
Martin Scorsese has become a frequent collaborator with Apple. His previous film, Killers of the Flower Moon, in which he co-starred with DiCaprio, won many awards after its release.
Scorsese also appears in the Keanu Reeves comedy “Outcome,” which opens next month, and appeared in “The Studio” and a new documentary series last year.
