verdict
At nearly twice the price of the original, the Amazon Echo Dot Max has better audio than any other Echo Dot (and nearly as good as the old standard Echo), plus built-in Zigbee, Thread, Matter, and a clever ultrasonic presence sensor. If you want a great all-rounder, this Alexa+-enabled smart speaker is for you.

Amazon Echo Dot Max: Introduction
If the Echo Studio (2025) is the equivalent of Amazon’s Homepod, you could whisper that the Amazon Echo Dot Max is the only replacement for the company’s Homepod Mini.
Overall, in terms of audio quality, price, and range of features, the Amazon Echo Dot Max is a great smart speaker suitable for a variety of purposes.
design and components
The Echo Dot series of speakers began life as a cheaper, more basic way to interact with Alexa. Amazon needs to step up its efforts because people generally prioritize music and audio and want better sound quality from any speaker, which is why we don’t have a 6.th generation to replace 5th This generation of Echo Dot has been newly named Amazon Echo Dot Max.
Like the smaller version of the Echo Studio (2025), the Echo Dot Max is an inexpensive, entry-level smart speaker available in graphite, white, and amethyst.
The new Echo Dot Max is very similar in size to the HomePod mini, making it easier to keep it on a shelf and out of the way.

The controls have been moved from the top of the previous model to the front of the speaker. This makes a lot of sense as it makes the controls easier to reach and see.
There are volume controls and a mute button to disable the microphone. There is no longer an action button to launch Alexa. Wake word detection has been improved so you probably won’t miss anything.

There is a power input on the back. That’s it. This speaker also doesn’t have threads for wall mounting like the Studio Max model.

Features
Like the Echo Studio, the Amazon Echo Dot Max is built for Alexa+ and is available if you’re in the US, but not yet here in the UK where standard Alexa is available. It is equipped with an AZ3 processor and AI accelerator to improve Alexa+ response.
These are also a little useful for standard Alexa. Faster response and better wake word detection. Even if you whisper quietly into the speaker, it will respond.
Under the hood, it’s a good thing that you get all the smart home benefits of the larger Echo Studio, including Thread and Zigbee hubs (Matter compatible, of course), temperature sensors, and ultrasonic presence detection. Enabling this feature allows Echo Dot Max to detect the presence or absence of a person and start a routine. Similar to my experience with Echo Studio (2025), this feature worked consistently and reliably.

Tap gestures are also supported, allowing you to tap the top to play/pause, stop an alarm, or end a conversation.
sound quality
Amazon’s Echo Dot Max has improved sound with a 0.8-inch tweeter and 2.5-inch woofer, delivering deeper audio and more bass than previous models. Notably, the Echo (4th generation) launched for £10 less and featured dual 0.8-inch tweeters and a larger 3-inch woofer.

Compared to the previous Dot, the audio improvements are obvious, especially when it comes to bass. On Rage Against the Machine’s Bomb Track, the drums thud without shaking the room like expensive speakers.
In general, the audio is balanced and clean, even if it doesn’t have the power or impact of larger speakers. A single speaker doesn’t provide stereo separation, and audio is stuck to where the Echo Dot Max is placed.
With the upcoming Alexa Home Theater, you can use Echo Dot Max with up to five other Dot Max speakers or Echo Studio (2025) models and Subs. This setup is compatible with some Fire TV devices.
final opinion
The Echo Dot Max is almost twice as expensive as the old Echo Dot, but it almost justifies the price increase. The audio is almost as good as the old Echo (5).th generation), similar to (if not more than) the HomePod mini.
So, for most people, the Echo Dot Max is the best choice of Alex smart speaker, especially since it has all of the additional smart home features of the Echo Studio.
Test method
When we publish a review, you can rest assured that it is the result of long-term testing.
Smart speakers typically exist within an ecosystem, or set of products that all work together in harmony. It is also designed to offer a variety of cleaning options. Therefore, it is impossible to use a smart speaker for a week and make a judgment.
We test smart home kits all day every day, so we know what’s important and how a particular smart vacuum compares to the alternatives you’re considering.
Our reviews are comprehensive, objective, and unbiased, and of course, we don’t receive direct compensation to review devices.
