Xiaomi’s smart washing machine finally goes global

Xiaomi continues to go beyond phones and smart home gadgets. This time, we are bringing connected laundry appliances to Europe with the launch of Xiaomi Mijia washing machine and Mijia washer dryer.

The new home appliances are already on sale in China and have first landed in Germany. The standalone washing machine costs €449 (down from the MSRP of €499). Meanwhile, the washer-dryer can be purchased for 479 euros instead of the regular price of 559 euros.

Xiaomi is best known for its affordable smart home devices such as robot vacuums, air purifiers, and security cameras, but this launch signals new ambitions. We’re also getting more serious about large connected appliances.

Both front-loading machines share much of the same hardware. Each drum is 525mm and has a maximum rotation speed of 1,400RPM. Both have a washing capacity of 8 kg, suitable for families. The washer dryer supports drying loads up to 6kg. This is common for all-in-one machines.

The feature list is also quite comprehensive. Both models include a hot steam program designed to reduce bacteria and allergens. In addition to this, there is a quick 15 minute wash feature for small loads. Xiaomi also includes an automatic high-temperature drum cleaning feature. This feature helps reduce maintenance over time. Meanwhile, the color display on the front panel makes it easy to view wash programs without having to go through complicated menus.

Naturally, smart home integration is part of the package. Both appliances connect to the Xiaomi Home app, allowing users to remotely start or monitor cycles. Users can also adjust settings and receive firmware updates. This means it will be part of the same ecosystem as Xiaomi’s ever-growing lineup of connected home devices. They range from air purifiers to robot vacuums.

Xiaomi offers a two-year warranty on both machines. Inverter motors are warrantied for up to 12 years. This generally provides a bit of peace of mind for long-term home purchases.

UK availability has not yet been announced. However, Xiaomi is steadily expanding its smart home portfolio across Europe, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see washing machines appear in additional markets soon.
