Google’s decision to discontinue two of its most popular smart speaker products could have surprising ramifications for the broader smart home industry.
The company has confirmed that both the Nest Mini and Nest Audio have ended production, bringing the curtain down on the devices that have served as entry points to the Google Home ecosystem for more than five years. Existing units will continue to receive software updates and support, but new inventory will eventually disappear.
At first glance, this move appears to be a simple product refresh. Nest Mini was launched in 2019 as an affordable smart speaker powered by Google Assistant. A year later, the larger Nest Audio arrived, offering better sound quality and a more premium design. Since then, both devices have been installed in countless smart homes.
But their disappearance leaves an interesting gap in Google’s lineup, especially at the lower end of the market. Nest Mini has been one of the cheapest ways to add voice control, smart home management, and more recently Gemini-powered features to your room. Without this, new users face higher barriers to entry.
That’s where Matter could become increasingly important.
As cross-platform smart home standards continue to mature, consumers are becoming less reliant on a single ecosystem or device family. Rather than buying a specific smart speaker just to access a specific platform, Matter allows compatible devices from different brands to work together more seamlessly.
The result is a more flexible setup where users can choose hardware based on price, design, or functionality rather than worrying about compatibility. A Matter-enabled smart home can be controlled through a variety of devices and platforms. This reduces reliance on dedicated entry-level speakers like the Nest Mini.
Google’s hardware strategy also appears to be evolving. The recently launched Google Home Speaker is set to be the company’s next-generation smart home hub, combining improved audio performance with Gemini-powered AI features. Rumors of a new Google Home display suggest more changes may be on the way.
For existing Nest Mini and Nest Audio owners, there’s no immediate need to panic. Google says both products will continue to receive software updates, security patches, and customer support.
