Govee’s TV Backlight 3 uses dual cameras to mirror your screen more accurately

Govee has updated its camera-based TV backlight line with TV Backlight 3. This is a kit that upgrades the system’s core screen capture hardware to address the color accuracy and responsiveness limitations of previous models.

At the heart of that upgrade is a 4-megapixel dual camera that combines glass and plastic lens elements to reduce chromatic dispersion, an arrangement that Govee estimates will improve image sharpness by 30% compared to the 2MP lens featured in previous generation products.

The increased clarity extends especially to warm tones, as TV Backlight 3 features an improved red spectrum infrared filter designed to more accurately read warm screen tones. This is a weakness of camera-based systems, where orange and red tones have historically been reproduced with lower fidelity than cooler tones.

Beyond the optics, Govee has paired the new camera with a faster processor than the one used in previous models. This is a change aimed at matching the low-latency response of HDMI sync box solutions, which have traditionally held an advantage over camera-based kits when handling fast-paced games and action sequences.

LED strip and smart home features

The LED strip itself operates at 60 bulbs per meter and is used to produce a more natural white tone than a standard RGB strip. This is important for ambient wall lighting where the warm or cool color cast from the LEDs can visually conflict with the original screen content.

Govee divides the screen mapping system into 24 zones and uses an AI content filter to shift the lighting pattern depending on whether the source material is a bright animated feature or dark, low-contrast content, giving the strip a more detailed reference point than the broader zone counts found in previous backlight kits.

TV Backlight 3 also supports DreamView for adjusting wider interior lighting arrays and has Matter compatibility for integration with smart home systems beyond the Govee Home app, although some features remain exclusive to Govee’s own platform.

The kit costs $109.99 for the version that covers 55-inch to 65-inch TVs and $139.99 for the 75-inch to 85-inch version, both currently available in Govee stores and through Amazon.
