Birdfy has expanded the range of its camera feeder with Feeder Metal 2 (4K), which combines significant camera upgrades with a redesigned AI identification system that can recognize over 6,000 bird species.
The jump from 1080p to 4K represents the most visible change from the original Metal feeder, with the wide-angle camera capturing higher-resolution video that can be streamed to a companion app for live viewing or recorded playback at a frame rate limited to 20fps to maintain consistent stream performance.
That camera feeds Birdfy’s OrniSense AI system. The system goes beyond the database search approach of previous feeder iterations by generating custom summaries of facts and contextual insights about each species identified, adding an educational dimension that previous models could not provide.
Its OrniSense system was first featured in Hum Bloom, a hummingbird-specific feeder that Birdfy announced at CES 2026, making Metal 2 the second product to feature the technology and the first to bring it to feeders built for a broader range of garden bird species.
Beyond the identification upgrades, the Feeder Metal 2 retains the previous generation’s anti-chew metal panel construction, a design choice that protects the 1.8 liter seed storage container from squirrels and other garden animals that can relatively easily damage standard plastic feeders. c
The built-in solar battery completely eliminates the need for access to mains power, and the IP66 weather rating means the unit can withstand rain and adverse outdoor conditions without the need for shelter. An external Wi-Fi antenna also extends wireless range when installed further away from your home than the original, which is supported without a signal extender.
Feeder Metal 2 (4K) launches for $269.99, with a $299.99 version also available for buyers who want lifetime access to OrniSense AI features. This compares to a recurring subscription model that reflects the previous Feeder’s price of $4.99 per month or $49 per year for standard access.
Birdfy has not confirmed UK pricing or availability for Feeder Metal 2 (4K), but the product is now listed on its website following today’s launch announcement.
