I think I just vibe-coded Lil Finder Guy to my Mac.

Hey, it’s Friday. OpenAI has updated the codex. I have a Tamagotchi style pet. You can also make your own. Lil Finder Guy is floating above my dock.

This is the moment when Codex becomes a true super app

The new /pet feature in Codex is really just for fun.

Type “/pet” to show or hide one of several playful little creatures (not goblins, for some reason) or create your own.

Codex Pets are basically like little Dynamic Island-esque messengers that tell you what Codex is doing in the background while you’re using your Mac.

It’s cute, it’s the weekend, everyone wins.

Perhaps the most practical thing about Codex’s new pet feature is that it gives people who value virtual animated companions another reason to try Codex. The worst case scenario is that you end up doing something productive.

Or, in my case, you do a little research, spend a few minutes on Basic Apple Guy’s website, respond to a few prompts, make a pot of rice on the stove, and suddenly Lil Finder Guy hovers over the actual Finder icon and a message appears to share.

“The little ones. The square pegs on the docks. The blue and white dreamers. The little helpers who wave, wander, nap, and somehow make work easier. They are the pets of the Codex.”

Maybe it’s a signal to go touch the grass. Wait, it’s raining. Even better.

In the meantime, you can play with Codex pets and learn how to make your own here.

update: There is also a gallery now that includes specific Steve characters. The Basic Apple Guy also built a proper version of Finder Friends.
