Apple at Play highlights iPad and Mac use for England Rugby
To coincide with this year’s Men’s Six Nations Championship, the Apple UK YouTube channel has released an interesting look at how England Rugby uses Macs and iPads to analyze matches in real time.
In this video, Senior Team Analyst Joe Lewis explains how live data and video is collected, cropped and instantly shared with coaches during games, and how information is gathered to help with in-game and halftime adjustments.
Lewis explains:
Inside the box are two analysts, five coaches, seven video angles, and hundreds or thousands of data points. (…) Let’s break it down to the individual. The number of carries, the effectiveness of the carries, how many meters ran, the number of tackles, the number of missed tackles, etc. (…) All seven laptops are linked. (…) Exactly the same thing is sent to the bench. The iPad is used to paying attention to something specific.
The video also includes behind-the-scenes footage from the changing room, showing how analysts brief players under intense time pressure at half-time.
Even if you’re not into rugby, this video gives you a cool behind-the-scenes glimpse of what in-match analysis is really like, and the pressure that comes with it.
