SwitchBot has announced its latest gadget, a battery-powered presence sensor. It promises much higher accuracy than typical motion detectors and can run for up to two years on two AAA batteries.

The new sensor combines a 60Hz mmWave radar with a traditional PIR sensor and a built-in optical sensor, delivering a level of recognition that most low-cost detectors can’t match. While PIR handles the quick initial trigger when someone enters the room, mmWave radar takes over by detecting small movements such as subtle changes in posture or breathing. This means you can keep the room “occupied” while sitting completely still, solving the biggest problem with PIR-only devices.
SwitchBot also has thoughtful intelligence built into it. The sensor uses AI-based environmental learning to recognize and remove interference from things like fans and air conditioners, and a pet avoidance feature helps reduce false triggers from small animals. By combining data from movement, microtremors, and ambient light levels, sensors can enable truly context-aware automation—one that only keeps lights and appliances on when they’re actually needed.
Since it’s battery-powered, installation is incredibly flexible. The sensor attaches to walls, furniture, or metal surfaces using a rotatable magnetic base and has an IPX5 rating, so it can also be used in bathrooms. Range is reliable, with motion detection up to 8 meters and static presence detection up to 5 meters, easily covering most small to medium sized rooms.
Smart home support is wide-ranging. This sensor works with Matter via SwitchBot Matter-enabled hubs, home assistants, and leading voice assistants. Importantly, it also supports local automation, so your routines will continue to work even if the internet isn’t working.
The SwitchBot Presence Sensor is available now from the SwitchBot website, priced at $29.99 / £32.99 / €32.99. It’s a very SwitchBot-style price tag for a device that punches well above its weight.
