Ring’s new AI-powered feature reduces the amount of notifications you receive

Ring adds a little more intelligence to your home security feed. The company announced a new AI-powered feature called Video Descriptions (Beta), designed to make notifications smarter and significantly reduce noise.

Instead of sending a simple motion alert every time the camera detects activity, Ring’s new system now generates an AI-generated summary that explains what’s actually happening. So instead of a vague “motion detected” ping, you might see a message like “a person is walking to the front door” or “a car just pulled into the driveway.”

It’s a small adjustment, but it can make a big difference for those with multiple Ring cameras or crowded front porches, allowing you to quickly decide what’s worth checking while cutting down on unnecessary notifications.

This feature is currently in beta and requires a compatible Ring subscription. Currently only available in English and still being improved, users may receive two notifications for the same event. One is the initial alert, followed by an updated version with an AI-generated explanation.

Ring said the system uses advanced video analytics to understand what’s happening in each frame. But it’s not perfect. It can still be unstable due to low light, bad weather, or fast movement. That said, the company is focused on responsible AI with built-in safeguards to block inaccurate or inappropriate statements.

You can turn this feature on or off for each device in the Ring app under (Device Settings) → (Notification Settings) → (Video Description).

It’s the latest sign of Ring’s shift toward smarter, context-aware alerts that use AI to make notifications more useful and less intrusive. If all goes well during the beta period, this could be one of the most practical updates ever for those juggling multiple doorbells and cameras.
