IKEA has launched Ankarlägg, a new battery-powered motion-sensitive light designed to stick to almost any surface. Shaped like a cartoon light bulb, Ankarlägg is completely wireless and self-adhesive, positioning it as an adaptive lighting solution in the company’s growing smart home collection.
Ankarlägg is clearly built with ease of use in mind. Illuminates the hallway of the entrance, the bedroom as a night light, the inside of the cupboard, etc. To save power, the light will automatically turn off if no movement is detected for 30 seconds.
IKEA estimates the battery life to be about six months based on 10 triggers per day, and the device works without the need for a smart hub. Requires 3 AAA batteries, which can be easily replaced if needed.
Ankarlägg is priced at €2.99 in Europe, with global prices expected to be around £4 / $7 / AU$5 when it launches internationally. This is significantly cheaper than a typical smart light bulb and motion sensor combination, which can cost several times more.
According to information on IKEA’s French website, the lamp is battery-powered and has an adhesive backing, so it can be placed almost anywhere. It comes in handy when you don’t have any wiring in a place that requires attention to use the best smart lights.
This is IKEA’s latest foray into smart lighting, following the Bilresa remote control kit, Timmerflotte temperature sensor, and Myggspray wireless motion sensor.
While many of these devices rely on Thread hubs such as IKEA’s Dirigera, the Ankarlägg works independently, offering an easy, low-cost option for those looking for smart functionality without the need for additional accessories.
