Sonos kills video streaming plans

Sonos pulled the plug into a plan for a streaming video player that is currently developing under the codename “Pinewood.”

It claimed that it explained that it wasn’t explained to you as streaming hardware, according to Chris Welch, who claimed to have seen the Sonos streaming device in person last month.

In a new report, Welch said that despite the Pinewood project being “deep in development” and “a few months in beta,” the decision to shelved the launch was revealed in every letter from the leadership team.

The device was originally scheduled to be released later in 2025, but the team working on it took down the tool, and new CEO Tom Conrad shifted focus from the video.

Pinewood was meant to be a premium streaming video player with an HDMI switcher that supports Sonos Soundbars’ pass-through capabilities like Arc Ultra.

It is also said to offer streaming video apps with extra smart when configuring the Sonos surround sound system, with deep universal search and content aggregation.

Pinewood had a price tag rumored between $200 and $400. And with anyone his wife commented that Sonos might be struggling to convince him that it is worth the premium when its price tag leaks.

It was a much higher price than major streaming boxes and stick players such as Apple, Amazon, Nvidia, Google.

The news means that Sonos may not have had a major product launch in 2025, but given the absolute confusion that is 2024, that means that it may not be a bad thing as the brand can focus on sorting out the software and app issues that have caused omnipotent turbulence over the last few months.
