New references discovered in macOS 26.3 reveal multiple new Apple hardware products coming soon. Ahead of Apple’s special March 4th “experience,” there’s new mention of two new Studio Display models and a lower-cost MacBook powered by the oft-rumored A18 Pro chip.
Are new Mac external displays coming soon?
The references were unearthed this week in the following manner: mac world Inside the macOS 26.3 kernel extensions (kexts) released last week.
These files reference three unreleased Apple product IDs: J700, J427, and J527.
As previously reported, J700 is the codename for Apple’s rumored low-cost MacBook powered by the A18 Pro. The laptop is widely expected to be released next month and will feature a 13-inch display or smaller. bloomberg They also report that it’s made of aluminum and that Apple tested it in multiple fun colors, including light yellow, light green, blue, pink, classic silver, and dark gray.
But perhaps more interesting are the model identifiers for J427 and J527. “The differences between the two models are not clear, but the two most likely scenarios are either a larger screen size option or a lower-end version with fewer features,” Macworld speculates.
However, this is not the first report to reveal these two model identifiers. bloomberg previously referenced these model numbers in March of last year. The two possibilities outlined at the time by Mark Garman are:
Apple is developing both and plans to choose one to release, or choose a second model with a different screen size and specifications. After all, the Pro Display XDR is also getting a bit long, so it might make sense to replace that model
Apple currently sells two external displays, including the Studio Display (starting at $1,599) and the Pro Display XDR (starting at $4,999). Studio Display launched with Mac Studio in 2022, and Pro Display XDR launched with Mac Pro in 2019.
The fact that both of these external displays are referenced in macOS 26.3 suggests that they are separate products still in development. It remains to be seen if Apple plans to release both. Apple is scheduled to announce several new products during the week of March 2nd, so we should know more soon.
