How to set up and use Alexa routines in a smarter home

Make your home work your way with one Alexa command

Alexa routines provide a seamless, single command control for your smart home. In other words, it is the type of functionality you actually want in your smart home.

Not only does it turn on/off devices, a group feature within the Alexa app for a long time, but the routines are details about how those devices act with your commands.

This means dimming some lights, changing the colour of others, or firing the heating to a certain temperature based on one prompt.

In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a prompt. The routine can be started using a variety of methods, including motion sensors, time, temperature, humidity, and more.

This is everything you need to know about the Alexa routine.

What is an Alexa routine?

Alexa routines are a series of automatic events that occur based on a single command. It could turn off all your lights, your electric blankets on (thanks to the smart plug), and then watch before sleep when you say “Alexa, Bedtime” and so on, the TV upstairs can turn on for some lights.

Amazon also offers music, podcasts and radio in a mix of routines. Therefore, scenarios are limited only by imagination. In addition, in recent years, routines have become easier to create. Simply type it into a routine and use voice commands to use for things that cannot be selected as routine steps.

The obvious ideas of the routine are “movie time” and “bedtime”, the latter could bring real benefits to good night sleep. Getting your bedtime lighting and temperature set will help you sleep more comfortably, for example. This makes Alexa routines not only fun, but also great for your health.

However, users can draw actions and responses from the vast array of smart home devices, smart sensors and digital services, giving them more fun and freedom.

How to set up an Alexa routine and start a routine

Thankfully, it’s easy to set up and start an Alexa routine. Really, the biggest obstacle is knowing what you have in your home and what is useful within your routine, and what you actually do, and what your device will do, when.

However, once you’ve solved that, follow the instructions below to enjoy a real smart smart home.

What you need

  • Alexa App
  • Your smartphone or tablet
  • Alexa compatible devices

  • Select “Add Action” under “Alexa is.
  • Select “Name change” And give your routine a name.

What’s involved in your Alexa routine and how to set it up

Once you reach a part of the Alexa app’s routine, you will be listed with a list of current routines. Amazon recommends couples under the featured tab just to get started. There is also a routine activity tab that took place in your home.

There are two main elements of the Alexa routine: When (this is the event of your choice) and Alexa Will (this is the action that occurs). You can read the different child details of the events you can add below, as well as different types of actions.

Alexa Routine: Smart Home Events

There are various events to choose from when you select “When”: Voice, Schedule, Smart Home, Sound Detection, Alarms, Echo Buttons.

If you choosevoice This means that the routine is started based on the Alexa Voice command. Simply enter it manually. Whatever you want to say, make it natural and clear.

Smart Home– The base routine uses smart sensors and device status to trigger actions. For example, temperatures can be above or below a certain point, so certain things can be activated. If the fan is too hot, it may be a smart plug connected to the fan. Alternatively, if you leave the smart lock unlocked late at night, the smart light will flash.

Sound detection The routine uses a variety of sounds to trigger actions. Options include dog barking, snoring, beeping, coughing, water sounds, and crying babies. For example, if your dog starts to bark, it means that the Alexa smart speaker can create a routine to start playing calm music.

The echo button activates the routine when you press the echo button. You can also use the Flic2 smart home button to trigger the routine. You don’t need to explain the schedule, right?

Alexa routine: Smart Home Action

Once you have chosen a way to trigger the routine, build it and then the action will enter. The actions you add to your routine are the elements and smart home devices that are controlled when you say the selected command. Again, here is a long list of actions you can choose from.

We have experienced some immediate possibilities below, but it is worth noting that we do not need to build these from scratch. If your Alexa app has a specific group or scene set up, you can run it by running a shortcut.

“Alexa, when you go to bed.” For example, you can turn off the existing downstairs light group and then turn on the bedroom lights, but the brightness is 50%. If you want to build this device on a device-by-device basis, this is what you can do.

Light

You can add smart lights to your routine. It’s not just on/off controls. You can set the brightness, hue, tone and color of compatible smart bulbs.

Thermostat and smart heating

You can control the heating zone in your home using either the On/Off setting. This refers to refer to the default temperature in the smart home list or selecting the selected temperature for the routine, if the smart heating brand supports this.

Smart plug

You can choose to turn the smart plug on/off from within the routine. It is useful for things like lamps (no smart bulbs), gaming consoles, kettles, and more.

Speakers/Music

You can now add music, podcasts and radio to your routine. That’s a big part of making improved wake-up and bedtime recipes.

Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A great night routine allows you to do its business with your robot cleaner while you sleep.

air conditioning

Another great idea is to use a smart humidity sensor to trigger the power of a connected smart air purifier or dehumidifier.

Delay the step with the “Wait” option

You can also use the “Wait option.” This allows you to add blocks of time between steps. For example, you can wake up an alarm at 7am on your favorite radio station, but the lights will turn on and the kettle will fire until 7:15am.

Adding complex/nonlisted orders

Sometimes (often when the device manufacturer does not sort the device status of the connected technology), smart home devices do not work natively on ALEXA. Or, you want to do something that is not listed in the native options for your device.

The good news here is Customization An option to use Alexa’s typing capabilities to literally spell out what you want to do to your digital assistant.

For example, you can have steps in a routine with specific instructions for connected devices such as: “Alexa, ask abode to arm the alarm.”

The big warning here is that these complicated instructions must be the final action of the routine.

Other types of Alexa actions

In addition to triggering smart home devices, you can also add functionality to Alexa routines such as listed below.

news – Read Alexa’s flash briefing consisting of news skills. It’s like getting a bullet of news personalized to your liking.

weather – Have Alexa read the weather. It’s probably the best part of your awakening routine. Remember, these can be timed to turn off with your alarm, and if you connect your coffee to your smart plug, you will be the winner.

calendar -Alexa passes through the calendar, whether it’s today or tomorrow. You can also set it up to tell you what the next event is in the docket.

Messaging – No, Alexa is not going to text you. Instead, you can send notifications to Alexa via the Alexa app or an announcement via your Echo device.

traffic jam – Get a traffic report for your commute. Again, it’s the best part of my morning routine.

music -Alexa will play the songs you choose. This is perfect when you need a particular song to feel like something. For example, you can say “Alexa, please pump me up.” And I have that link Tiger’s eyes. You can choose to play songs from many music services, including Pandora, Tunein, Iheartradio, and Amazon Music.

Alexa says – This is a bit odd, but you can say the phrase to Alexa as part of the routine. Options include “good night” or “good morning”, eight different happy birthday messages, and, frankly, a bunch of strange compliments.

Share your Alexa routine with URL

You can also share Alexa routines. Create a URL for your custom routine so that you can share it with your contacts.

For example, say you have a morning routine. “Alexa, I’m awake.” Voice commands open smart blinds, turn on some lights, launch your favorite morning playlist, and disarm your smart security system. You have to go to the Alexa app, grab a shareable URL for that routine, and start building from scratch with friends and family.

To get a shareable URL, go to routine In the Alexa app, tap the desired routine, then tap the three dots in the top right corner.

Tap Share And select if you want to share it on text, email, or social media.

When you receive the URL, it will be retrieved via the on-screen instructions in the Alexa app, with some fields displayed in yellow text. Here you need to select the device that requires routine steps.

For example, you might have a LIFX light and a home security system on your bedside lamp, but you’ll use the INNR smart light and the Simplisafe system.
