The Homey Energy Dongle, which was announced late last year along with a suite of new software features, is currently shipping.
At a price of 39 euros, the energy dongle can provide homely European users with real-time insights into home energy consumption.
And Europe means Europe. Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, etc. can all be involved as smart meters have the P1 ports needed for the dongle.
In the UK, energy dongles don’t work, but the Homey Energy platform works with a variety of optical energy meter readers, such as Frient, Aotec, and Emporia.
But back the energy dongle. This is a P1 compatible device that connects directly to your home smart meter and streams live electricity, gas and even water usage (if supported) to a homely, professional or homely cloud platform.
The dongle integrates data from energy meters, smart plugs, solar inverters, and other power monitoring devices.
The launch of Homey Energy Dongle coincides with Homey’s enhanced energy monitoring capabilities, providing a complete overview of energy flows in a clean, easy-to-read interface for users.
While the Energy tab supports a variety of third-party surveillance devices, the Homely Energy Dongle is the simplest plug-and-play solution for home use with a P1 smart meter.
Once plugged in, you can enter your energy contract price in the Homey app to see cost insights along with KWH usage values. Cost insights are available on a daily, weekly, and monthly overview, and support dynamic pricing immediately after launch.
In addition to tracking energy usage, Homey also allows you to automate your energy consumption using homely and sophisticated flows.
For example, users can set up their EVs to charge their electricity prices at off-peak times, or turn off high-energy fixtures during peak pricing periods.
The dongle connects via Wi-Fi and includes a built-in P1 splitter. This means that users can connect additional devices (such as EV charger load balancers) without the need for additional adapters.
While most new smart meters provide enough power to run the dongle directly, USB-A to USB-C cables are included in meters that require external power.
Connect locally to Homey Pro or connect to both the free and premium tiers of your home cloud.
The homey energy dongle is shipped today and is available for 39 euros. To order, please visit the Homey website.
Athom, the Netherlands-based brand behind Homey, was acquired by LG last year and had plans to integrate Homey’s software into the ThinQ platform.
LG continues to cater to Power users and smart home enthusiasts, as Samsung did with SmartThings, ensuring Homey remains independent.
Homey’s growing smart home ecosystem, powered by community-driven integration and LG backing, is a compelling candidate for managing connected devices in a locally controlled environment focused on privacy.
