Drops of God Season 2 is coming to Apple TV
In terms of overall impact on pop culture, Drops of God may not be a Severance-level or Pluribus-level series. Still, as my colleague Ryan wrote a few days ago, this is “one of the most overlooked gems in Apple TV’s library of shows and movies.”
In fact, the series won the 2024 International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, and its first season holds a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Drops of God tells the story of Camille Léger (played by Fleur Geoffrier), a young woman whose estranged father (a world-renowned wine critic) dies, leaving behind an extraordinary wine collection.
To stake her claim, she must face her father’s former pupil Kazunari Tomine (played by Tomohisa Yamashita) in a high-stakes blind tasting series that spans continents, cultures, and decades of wine history.
This series is based on the manga of the same name by Tadashi Aki, and is actually the pen name of the brother-sister duo Yuko Kirin and Nobu Kirin.
Following its success, the manga series ranked on the New York Times manga bestseller list, and Apple acquired the live-action rights to the US, France, and Japan, which will premiere on Apple TV in April 2023.
If you’ve already watched Season 1 of Drops of God and want to know what’s in store for Season 2, here’s Apple’s synopsis.
In Season 2 of ‘Drops of God’, Camille and Issei are exposed to their most dangerous challenge yet. It’s about uncovering the origins of the world’s best wines. The mystery is so profound that even his legendary father, Alexandre Leger, could not solve it. What begins as a quest for heritage becomes a quest for truth across continents and centuries, unearthing forgotten histories, hidden conflicts, and secrets buried for generations. As their quest takes them to the ends of the world and the darkest corners of themselves, Camille and Issei must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice. The answer could shatter their bond as brothers…or both.
