Bumper SmartThings update adds issue 1.4, smarter routines, home intercoms and more

Samsung has rolled out an update to Beefy Smartthings, and while there are plenty of quality of life improvements, Big News is full support for Substance 1.4 and the device type it has introduced.

This means that SmartThings users can now synchronize a wider range of energy-related devices directly into the SmartThings ecosystem, given their water heaters, solar inverters and battery storage.

Aqara’s heels have just announced upgrades and support for key issues in Matter 1.4, and Samsung will be joining the Home Assistant after the latest specs.

In addition to the new device types, Matter 1.4 also improves interoperability between the platform and device, and adds additional control options.

Samsung doesn’t detail exactly how many of the 1.4 issues are rolling out on the first day, but it’s a clear signal that the platform is actively maintaining support for the issue, continuing to steal marches on other major platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.

Beyond Matter, SmartThings has also been updated to include new automation bells and whistles.

You can create routines that run on a weekly, monthly, or annual schedule. Perfect for birthday lighting effects and holiday occasions.

The routine also works well with the Samsung TV Plus (if you have a 2025 model). Therefore, you can automatically launch morning news.

Speaking of mornings, Smartthings relies on sleep automation by syncing more closely with Samsung Health. If you’re wearing a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, you can now build automation based on your actual sleep and wake times. Think about turning off the lights when you doze off, opening blinds when you wake up, and adjusting your thermostat to keep your sleep environment in a proper way.

Samsung says it can track everything from room temperature to CO2 levels and help you fine-tune your condition and improve your rest.

It also has a new intercom-style feature that allows you to send audio messages between SmartThings-compatible speakers. It works both at home and remotely, allowing you to broadcast messages even if you’re still stuck in the office.

Finally, Samsung’s Calm Onboarding feature, which was released at the end of last year, also has bumped.

Buy compatible devices directly from samsung.com and get real-time orders and delivery updates within SmartThings AP PLUP.

Overall, it’s a very solid update, bringing smart things closer to the elusive dreams of truly intelligent, platform-independent, ambient smart homes.
