Apple has released iOS 12.5.8 for some older iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. This includes important updates for devices that cannot be upgraded to the latest version of iOS. Here are the details:
Three years (and three days) later, there’s a new system update
Today, Apple released multiple beta versions of its operating system for developers, along with several updates for devices running stable versions of iOS and iPadOS.
Of these releases, iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 include important certificate enhancements ahead of their January 2027 expiration date. From Apple’s release notes:
This update expands the certificates required for features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation to ensure they continue to work beyond January 2027.
According to Apple, iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 are available on the following devices:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone6
- iPhone6 plus
- iPad Air
- iPad mini2
- iPad mini3
- iPod touch (6th generation)
That means if you or someone you know is still using one of these devices, it’s important to install updates to ensure key services like iMessage and FaceTime and device activation continue to work beyond January 2027.
There is still plenty of time before these certificates expire, but it may be worth updating just to remove any bugs that may have appeared since the last system update released on January 23, 2023.
Are you still using any of these devices? Let us know in the comments.
