Apple TV joins Roku’s “premium subscription” lineup

There’s a big Premier lineup coming up in March, and Apple TV just signed a deal to join Roku’s “Premium Subscription” lineup. Here’s what that means:

Apple signs new deal with Roku to increase Apple TV subscribers on third-party platforms

Back in October 2024, Apple partnered with Amazon to allow users to subscribe to Apple TV within Prime Video.

By joining Prime Video’s channel lineup, Apple has made it easy for existing Amazon users to try out Apple TV without the need for a separate app or new account.

A similar partnership has now been announced between Apple and Roku.

More than 70 individual services are currently available through Roku’s subscription services, leveraging the market power of both Roku and the Roku Channel to drive discovery and adoption. Along with Amazon, the company is a major streaming gatekeeper in the US, and its reach is expected to exceed 100 million households this year.

Apple TV… has been available as an app on Roku since its launch in 2019. In Roku’s larger space, its interface is on a third of all smart TVs in North America, and it maintains comprehensive free and subscription streaming outlets through its connected TV devices. Many of the most well-known services, including Netflix, are available there, but the 70+ services in the premium lineup get more visibility and promotion. Roku also has a high level of participation in revenue sharing with these partners.

Roku and Amazon are both popular streaming aggregators, and thanks to these partnerships, Apple TV is now accessible to more users.

Apple tried to build its own aggregator business through Apple TV Channels, which launched in 2019, but it never got off the ground due to a limited number of streaming partners participating.

The rollout of enhanced Roku support comes ahead of Apple TV’s big March lineup, including the kickoff of the F1 season.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month, but you can also get discounts through Apple One bundles.
