Aliro is the new smart lock standard coming this year

Coming in Q1 2026, Aliro is a new cross-platform smart lock standard that brings NFC tap unlocking and UWB hands-free unlocking to phones and wearables without the need for the cloud.

A new interpretation of digital keys

After a long wait, Aliro has finally passed validation and is expected to hit the market in early 2026, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance. This standard combines NFC, Bluetooth LE, and ultra-wideband (UWB) and allows phones and watches, regardless of brand, to function as digital keys.

Aliro keeps credentials on-device and uses asymmetric encryption to communicate directly with the lock. This means you don’t have to open an app or rely on a cloud connection, and it can work offline just like a physical key. It’s a reassuring move that I haven’t felt in a while.

Why does this change the situation?

We expect Alilo to break down platform silos. While Apple’s Home Key sets the standard, Aliro aims to bring Android up to modern speed and allow households with iPhones, Pixels, and Galaxies to all use the same lock effortlessly.

Major manufacturers and chipmakers like Apple, Google, Samsung, Qualcomm, and NXP are supporting this effort, and several rock brands have already announced their support.

don’t get too excited yet

For consumers, there are some practical points to keep in mind.

Compatibility is a factor, as the lock requires a specific radio and antenna. This means older models are likely not upgradable. This system uses different modes depending on different needs. NFC for intentional taps, BLE for low-energy commands, and UWB for precise unlocking while keeping your phone in your pocket.

Importantly, it works even without a data connection. This is very important if your cell phone signal is weak.

Deployment will depend on certification schedules and how quickly manufacturers can ship certified models. Ultimately, real-world performance, including factors like battery life and setup friction, will determine the verdict, but it’s reality, and it’s coming in 2026.
