The hit sci-fi series “Silo” returns today for Season 3, streaming exclusively on Apple TV. This acclaimed series, based on the book series by Hugh Howie, depicts humans living in vast underground bunkers, but no one knows how they got there.
In the third season, the split timeline narrative begins to unravel some of the show’s biggest mysteries. In the present timeline, Juliet (starring Rebecca Ferguson) suffers from amnesia, while flashbacks in the past timeline show who, how, and why the silo was built in the first place.
The main character, Juliet, escapes from the main silo in season 2 and discovers a lot of provocative information, and season 3 begins with her return. But, frustratingly, she’s faced with the rather inconvenient condition of memory loss, so she can’t spill the beans right away.
On the other hand, flashbacks rewrite world history. The jump to this part of the story was teased in the final minutes of the season 2 finale.
The portrayal of the past also serves to disrupt the drama’s formula, escaping from the usual setting of an underground bunker to the lush world of an alternate history Earth, with unstable geopolitics motivating the creation of silos seemingly under threat of nuclear war.
Critical reviews for season 3 appear to be solid, with Silo currently boasting a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Many reviews indicate that the culmination of the events of S3E9 and S3E10 will be the show’s strongest season finale to date.
Apple has already renewed Silo for a fourth and final season, likely to premiere next year. Unlike many modern mystery box shows that last forever or are canceled without a resolution, Silo is on its way to a definitive end, and Season 3 continues in that direction.
