
Currently available in beta, Lettera is a standalone Markdown editor app built around the same editor that powers Bear 2. Here are the details:
Lettera is now available in beta
In June 2021, the developers of the Bear app shared an update on Panda, the codename for Bear’s “next editor.” In it, they detailed several new features coming to the app, including a “full switch to Markdown.”
Two years later, Bear 2.0 has added over 20 additional features. This includes the ability to hide Markdown syntax while writing, and support for Markdown extensions that enhance features such as tables, footnotes, and YAML.
This week, the developer announced Lettera in response to many users who “asked if[the new editor built for Bear 2.0]could work on its own as a standalone app.”

Lettera is a native and elegant Markdown editor for macOS. Built for writers, researchers, developers, and anyone who works with documents, from simple blog drafts to complete technical documentation systems.
Lettera can open individual Markdown files for reading and editing, or entire folders that act as writing workspaces. By default, the app opens a dedicated Lettera folder in iCloud, but users can also open any folder stored on their Mac.

- Write with WYSIWYG Markdown Lettera performs live rendering according to the CommonMark standard. Markdown syntax is hidden when you’re not editing, so you can write and preview in one place. The BIU formatting bar can also be easily styled.
- Format with rich stylestables, quotes, lists, code blocks, inline images and attachments, Mathjax formulas, and more.
- Share and export Copy your text as plain text, rich text, markdown, or HTML. When you want to send your work somewhere, export to PDF, JPG, ePub, and more
- Manage files and folders Directly from the sidebar without leaving the app. Open files in tabs to work with multiple documents in one place. Image files can be previewed directly within the editor
- table of contents Navigate through your document with a complete outline and jump to any section with one click
Lettera is now available on TestFlight. This allows users to try it out, provide feedback, and help shape its development, from eliminating bugs to improving the app’s look, feel, and functionality.
