New MacBook Ultra report covers release timing, display and more

new report from Omdia provides the latest information on the upcoming MacBook Pro overhaul (rumored to be called the MacBook Ultra), including release timing, OLED displays, and more.

Omdia says MacBook Ultra could arrive sooner than expected

research company Omdia today announced a new report covering the growing trend of OLED adoption in laptops. As part of its broader market coverage, this report mentions some important details about Apple’s upcoming MacBook Ultra (or MacBook Pro, if the brand name is what it is).

One particularly surprising detail concerns the timing of the release.

The report goes on to say that Samsung will offer displays for the MacBook Ultra in two sizes starting in July, before going on to say that “the device is expected to launch in Q3 2026.”

Apple doesn’t tend to launch major new products in July or August, so a Q3 launch almost certainly means a September debut.

We expect the MacBook Ultra to be released by October or November, potentially in early 2027. If it launches in Q3, that means we’ll likely see a new Mac at the iPhone event.

Screen size and OLED display technology details

Besides the release date, the report also states that Apple’s new laptop will come in two screen sizes: 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch.

The MacBook Pro currently comes in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes, so this difference is either a rounding error or the MacBook Ultra has a slightly larger screen.

Finally, Omdia We highlight the specific technology used in the MacBook Ultra’s tandem OLED and mention its power benefits.

“Apple is using a hybrid OLED based on oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology in the MacBook Pro series,” said Jerry Kang, practice leader at Omdia. “This combination is used for the first time in this form factor and is designed to reduce power consumption compared to LTPO and RGB single OLEDs.”

These display changes could allow the MacBook Ultra to offer battery life comparable to current MacBook Pro models, even with a thinner design.
