iPhone Ultra is here: 6 new features coming to Apple’s high-end model

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is scheduled to be released this fall, and there are rumors that it will be called the “iPhone Ultra.” Here are six features to expect from Apple’s new high-end iPhone Ultra.

Design: Titanium book-style crease, wrinkle-free display

Dummy models of iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max

Apple’s first foldable iPhone Ultra has an extremely unique design for an iPhone.

Unlike most foldables, iPhone Ultra is wider than it is tall when unfolded. It can be folded book-style, and the outer display looks shorter and wider than other iPhone screens, while the inner display is similar in size and shape to the iPad mini.

Also, unlike previous foldables, the iPhone Ultra’s inner display is expected to have a wrinkle-free design, which is a big step forward for the form factor.

iPhone Ultra takes some design cues from iPhone Air. The edges are titanium, and when unfolded it’s very thin, and when folded it looks like two iPhone Airs stacked on top of each other, but even thinner.

Finally, rumors suggest that the only color options will be offered in black and white.

Display: Unique size and orientation

The iPhone Ultra has two displays, one on the outside and one that unfolds to reveal it. The rumored dimensions are:

  • Outer display: 5.3-5.5 inches
  • Inner display: 7.6-7.8 inches

The outer screen is similar in size to the iPhone mini, but has a wider aspect ratio.

The inner screen could look very similar to an iPad mini when held in the hand.

Camera: 2 rear lenses, 2 front lenses

iPhone Ultra will have two rear cameras: 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide.

This means users who choose the Ultra over the Pro model will miss out on the telephoto camera and its improved zoom capabilities.

Since iPhone Ultra has two displays, it also has two front-facing cameras, one for each display.

Not much is known about these cameras, but Apple will likely use the same 18MP center stage camera that launched with the iPhone 17 last year. A perforated design is expected.

Software: iOS 27 multitasking function

iOS 27 is expected to introduce new iPhone software features exclusive to iPhone Ultra.

According to Mark Gurman: bloombergtwo major upgrades are planned:

  1. Parallel apps for multitasking
  2. iPad-like app layout

Garman said the device doesn’t support full-fledged windows functionality in iPadOS 26 and won’t be able to run iPadOS at all when it’s open. But it still looks like iOS 27 will take some cues from the iPad’s software.

Apple Silicon: A20 Pro chip, C2 cellular modem

The iPhone Ultra features the new A20 Pro chip and C2 cellular modem, both of which will also ship with the iPhone 18 Pro.

The A20 Pro is rumored to be a larger-than-usual upgrade, further improving efficiency through the use of a new 2-nanometer process and WMCM (wafer-level multi-chip module).

The new chip will have the same 12GB of RAM as the A19 Pro. However, it will reportedly come with faster LPDDR5 for better performance.

C2 is Apple’s next generation in-house cellular modem. This replaces Qualcomm’s 5G modem with an Apple-designed solution with several new benefits.

touch id

It may seem strange for a model called “Ultra,” but Apple’s foldable iPhone doesn’t offer Face ID for authentication. Instead, Apple is bringing back Touch ID and integrating it into the power button.

Touch ID on iPhone Ultra is implemented in a very similar way to what the iPad Air and iPad mini offer.

Due to the device’s thinness, Apple was reportedly unable to shrink the necessary Face ID components enough to fit two separate modules (one for each screen) into the iPhone Ultra. But perhaps that will change in future models.

iPhone Ultra price and summary

Rumors about the iPhone Ultra’s pricing are flying around. Most analysts expect the starting price for the 256GB model to be around $1,999. However, some expect the starting price to be lower, while others argue that the starting price will be higher.

One thing is for sure, though: this will be the most expensive iPhone ever. Apple clearly hopes that by combining what is essentially an iPhone and an iPad into one device, it will justify the price.
