Apple TV is about to launch its best-ever summer lineup, but the streamer’s current offerings are also worth noting, including Apple’s two highest-rated current series so far this year.
#1: Widows Bay
Widow’s Bay is the kind of series that, on paper, probably shouldn’t have worked. It’s a mash-up of horror/comedy/thriller genres with the charm of a small-town character drama.
But creator and showrunner Katie Dippold and director Hiro Murai have masterfully put together a unique combination of genres to deliver what one critic described as “unlike anything else on television.”
The show currently has an impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes from 58 critic reviews. This makes it a tie for Apple’s highest rated show of the year per RT.
Widows Bay star Matthew Rhys (american, the beast inside me) as the mayor of a charming island town that may or may not be cursed.
Here’s Apple’s official synopsis and trailer:
Widow’s Bay is a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperately trying to rebuild his struggling community. There’s no Wi-Fi, cell phone reception is spotty, and you have to contend with superstitious locals who believe the island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. it’s not. They think he’s soft and mean. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for her teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously he succeeded. Finally, the tourists arrived. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, old stories that seemed too ridiculous to be true begin to happen again. “Widow’s Bay” is a blend of authentic horror and character-driven comedy.
Widow’s Bay currently has three episodes, with more added every Wednesday until June 17th.
#2: Margo’s money problems
“Margo’s Got Money Trouble” is a limited series based on the best-selling novel by Luffy Thorpe.
The cast includes Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman, Nicole Kidman, Thaddea Graham, Greg Kinnear, and Marcia Gay Harden.
The comedy-drama has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 61 critical reviews, tying it with Widow’s Bay as the top-reviewed Apple series this year. Both shows couldn’t be more different, but each offers something unique.
David E. Kelley is the creator of the show, which is his second Apple series alongside the hit legal thriller Presumed Innocent. Kelly is currently working on the third of the Apple series, The Bonfire of the Vanities, set in New York, with director Matt Reeves (batman).
The synopsis and trailer for “Margo’s Got Money Trouble” are as follows:
“Margo’s Got Money Trouble” is a bold, heartwarming, comedic family drama about Margo (Elle Fanning), a recent college dropout and aspiring writer, the daughter of a former Hooters waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a former pro wrestler (Nick Offerman), who is forced to juggle a new baby, mounting bills, and dwindling means to pay the bills.
Margo’s Got Money Trouble currently has six episodes, with more coming on Wednesdays through May 20th.
