Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light Reviews

verdict

The Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light is a sophisticated update that brings Hue gradient lighting to the outdoors in a way that feels purposeful rather than gimmicky. It’s large, expensive, and far less shape-friendly than the marketing suggests, but the light quality, color consistency, and scene effects are among the best available for outdoor spaces at the moment. If you’re already invested in the Hue ecosystem, it makes a lot of sense. If not, there are cheaper and more flexible options such as Govee.

  • smooth diffused light

  • amazing color gradation

  • excellent outdoor scene

  • Works across the ecosystem

  • expensive

  • A little bulky

  • Requires Bridge for full functionality

Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light: Introduction

Announced at IFA in September alongside the new Hue Bridge Pro, the latest Philips Hue neon outdoor strip lights replace the model that first appeared at the same show seven years ago.

This new version is no minor refresh either, introducing gradient lighting and Hue’s Chromasync color system in a light strip form factor for the first time outdoors.

Neon outdoor strip lights can be used indoors or outdoors, are available in multiple lengths, and don’t strictly require a hue bridge thanks to Bluetooth support. However, without this, there are limitations. More on this later.

As you’d expect from Hue, this is still a premium product, but the pricing is at least moving in the right direction. You can now get 3 meters for about the same amount of money you paid for 2 previously.

Still, competitors like Govee are willing to sell 10 meter strips for similar cash.

So, is Hue’s version worth the premium? Find out more in our full review of the Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light.

design and build

This is not a subtle light strip. The neon outdoor strip light is thick and heavy, so you won’t miss it once you install it. At about an inch wide and half an inch thick, it feels more like a flexible rubber tube than the slim LED strips Hue sells for indoor use.

This size comes with both advantages and disadvantages. I’m not going to hide this along the narrow edges or run it neatly under the trim. On the other hand, the bulk allows for better diffusion. The LED is completely invisible under the silicone housing and produces a uniform, continuous light emission with no visible hot spots.

The strips can be bent and shaped right out of the box, but your expectations need to be realistic. You can achieve gentle curves and flowing lines. Sharp corners, narrow tips, and complex shapes are not included. The promotional image, showing a clear outline of the moon and stars, is optimistic at best. In reality, we didn’t get anything close to that level of definition.

Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light Screws and Fixings

The mounting is also more permanent than some might expect. There is no adhesive on the back. Instead, Signify includes a small mounting bracket and screws to attach it to the wall. Although safe, it precludes rapid repositioning. It also requires some planning to install in your garden or walkway, as there are no spikes in the ground.

Weather resistance is solid. The strip itself is IP67 rated and can be used outdoors all year round, but the power supply is IP20 rated and should be stored in a protected area. Like other Hue outdoor lights, it comes with a thick waterproof connector and the familiar oversized plug.

Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light Power

This strip is integrated into Hue’s low-voltage outdoor system and comes with a 30-watt power supply. If you already have a 40-watt or 100-watt Hue outdoor power supply, you can use that instead to power multiple lights from a single power supply.

Setting up

Setup is classic Hue and very easy. Pairing the Neon Outdoor Strip Light directly via Bluetooth gives you basic control over brightness and color through the Hue app.

However, for most people, using Hue Bridge will be the preferred route. Connecting Bridge unlocks scenes, automation, sync features, and Matter bridging. Adding lights takes only a few minutes. Scan the QR code, assign it to a room or zone, give it a name, and you’re done.

Hue lights can also connect to compatible Amazon Echo devices such as the 3rd generation Echo Show 8, Echo Hub, and Echo Show 21 via Zigbee, allowing Alexa control without a Hue skill.

If you’re running Home Assistant, you can also pair directly without going through Hue Bridge.

For this review, all testing was conducted on the Hue bridge, which handles control duties.

Features and performance

Whether you choose the 3-meter, 5-meter, or 10-meter version, the brightness limit is 1,100 lumens for all sizes. This is lower than the previous generation, which peaked at 1,650 lumens, but for everyday use it’s more than bright enough for patios, pergolas, walls, and garden equipment.

Hue’s gradient lighting is truly the star of the show. You can choose a linear gradient, a mirrored color layout, or a scatter mode that distributes color more organically along a strip. Diffuse mode is particularly effective, blending multiple colors smoothly to create soft, atmospheric lighting with minimal effort.

Chromasync technology ensures color consistency from one end of the strip to the other, avoiding the uneven tones often found in cheaper gradient strips.

Wrap Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Lights around your tree

From warm and cozy colors to very cool daylight colors, white looks especially beautiful, but you’ll have full access to Hue’s RGB palette.

Hue’s Scene Gallery continues to improve, with major improvements recently announced at CES 2026 that make many of the built-in effects shine outdoors.

Colored fireplaces and glowing scenes look great with neon strips and feel much more dynamic than older non-gradient models.

Dynamic effects can also be turned on and off for individual segments to add movement and depth not possible with standard outdoor strips.

To be clear, advanced features like scenes, automation, syncing, and Matter support all require Hue Bridge. Although the strip is not a native Matter or Thread device, bridging through the Hue bridge definitely works.

Once connected, it works just like any other Hue light and supports Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, and more.

final thoughts

The Philips Hue Neon Outdoor Strip Light delivers exactly what you would expect from the latest Hue products. The lighting effects are impressive, color reproduction is excellent, and integration with the broader Hue ecosystem is seamless.

At the same time, there is no denying that it is much larger, more expensive, and much less flexible than its marketing image suggests.

If your goal is to add rich, atmospheric lighting to your outdoor space with minimal setup effort and consistently great results, neon outdoor strip lights will do the job well. Especially for existing Hue users, this is one of the most powerful additions to outdoor lighting that Signify has released in years.

Test method

When we publish a review, you can rest assured that it is the result of long-term testing.

Smart lights typically exist within an ecosystem, or perhaps a set of products that all work in harmony. Therefore, it is impossible to use connected lights for a week and make a judgment.

We test smart home kits all day, every day, so we know what’s important and how a particular light compares to the alternatives you’re considering.

Our reviews are comprehensive, objective and unbiased, and of course we don’t receive direct compensation to review devices.
